IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT THE PROPOSED NEW NORTHLINK LIVESTOCK CONTAINERS
: UPDATED **
The History of The
Equestrian Association of Shetland
In 1999 The
Shetland Riding Club and Pony Club Association was formed with the
intention to "get bums back into saddles". By 2000 rider
numbers had increased and the Association was renamed The Equestrian
Association of Shetland.
We currently
have 75 members, all benefiting from the Association network, receiving
monthly newsletters, discounts at events and membership of British
Riding Clubs through affiliation.
The Aims of the Equestrian
Association of Shetland
The Association
primarily acts as a central voice for the interests of all horse
and pony riders in Shetland, promoting the sport, recreational and
safety aspects of equestrianism.
We are currently
fundraising to acquire a safe, sheltered, well-lit riding arena
where we can hold events, training and exercise all year round.
The photo on
the right highlights the main reason that action must be taken.
The riding park at Clickimin is the only area allocated to all the
horses and riders, from all over Shetland to use at their discretion
to exercise, train and compete.
Bounded as
it is by the roundabout and two main roads, without any adequate
parking, loading/unloading facilities, or warm-up area, safety is
becoming a major concern as the sport grows ever more popular.
Clubs, organisations
and private horse/pony owners all feel that this area is too unsafe
to be used. As a result of this equestrian competitions can no longer
be held there and training has been reduced to a minimum. This is
seriously impeding any development in our sport.
With proper
facilities we could safely train to a higher standard and be more
adequately prepared to represent Shetland's unique equestrian heritage
both at home and on mainland UK.
If you too
have concerns about the safety issues mentioned above, please contact
us or your local Councillor.
Grazing
The Equestrian
Association currently leases rough grazing land in Lerwick for members
horses and ponies. If you would be interested in grazing your horse
on this land this summer download a Grazing
Application or contact our Estates
Officer.
